Occupational therapy combines both the motor and sensory components of learning to facilitate childhood development. Through creative and purposeful play techniques, children learn and develop fine-motor, sensory motor, and self-help skills, which allows them to more purposefully and independently participate in their typical environments of home, school, family and community.
Occupational therapy can address a multitude of developmental issues including fine-motor, pre-academic skills, activities of daily living, self-care skills (dressing or feeding), sensory processing (the ability to take in information, interpret it, and make an appropriate response), movement and mobility challenges, learning challenges, and physical challenges.
Sensory processing disorder is a delay or a hindering of the ability of the brain to register sensations and respond both physically and cognitively in an appropriate manner, or respond at all. Sensory processing disorder is a condition in which the brain has trouble receiving information correctly which can impact motor skills, learning, and development. Sometimes the brain does not receive the correct amount of information or "under registers" the sensory information which can result in sensory aversions, sensory seeking behaviors and can affect attention, speech, and movement for motor skills. The child can have hypersensitivities or hypo sensitivities to certain sensory information. In some cases, they can have both. Some children have difficulty filtering or modulating sensory information and have difficulty with loud noises, textures with touch or by eating, certain smells, and with movement. Sensory processing delays can affect feeding, speech, attention, motor planning and imitation skills, spatial awareness, coordination, grasping skills, strength, safety awareness, socialization, regulation, learning and development.
Regulation is the ability to calm or soothe oneself. Children with regulation disorders can become quickly overstimulated. They are fearful or take a long time to separate from their parents or caregivers in new environments or new situations. They can have longer tantrums or multiple tantrums that can last throughout the day. Their emotions are never constant and are very quickly changed. Regulation can affect sleep, attention, independence, social skills and learning. If a child is unregulated, they are unable to learn and focus. This can affect development, socialization, as well as academic areas.
